In March I have been on assignment in South Africa to produce a documentary about a German - South African partnership program.

Phumlani Vernon Simamane is one of 90 young men and women trained in the Construction Center of Excellence at the Esikhawini Campus Umfolozi TVET College in Richards Bay, South Africa, as plumber, carpenters and bricklayers modeled on the German dual apprenticeship training system. It is a project within the framework of the Vocational Training Partnership between the Kreishandwerkerschaft Steinfurt-Warendorf and Umfolozi TVET College, which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development since November 2015.

The training center was officially opened by Frank Tischner, CEO of the Kreishandwerkerschaft Steinfurt-Warendorf, and Firoz Patel of the South African Department for Higher Education and Training in October 2017. The German partner not only provided the infrastructure and equipment, but also trained the teachers and trainers of the college in workshop organization, course planning, educational controlling and process optimization. The project aims to make vocational training more practice-oriented by integrating elements of the German dual apprenticeship training model and to involve more companies in the region in training.

Phumlani Vernon Simamane's goal is to become a trade-tested craftsman to gain new career opportunities in his home county.
